New Spanish EVS Volunteer in Kavadarci

Hola, Hello, Здраво, My name is Laia, I’m 21 years old and I’m from a town near Barcelona, which is my favourite city in the world ;)

It’s been a week since I came to Kavadarci and I’m very glad I did. The town is beautiful and even more with its people and lifestyle.

I love quiet places, but I also enjoy seeing and walking through places full of life like the bazar that is held three days a week. It’s so lively and colourful because of all the sellers and buyers and the fruit, vegetables, nuts, olives and other delicious foods.

I still don’t understand or speak Macedonian but I hope I will learn so I can communicate better here.

Though I find it really difficult to remember the words and to pronounce them xD

Applying for this volunteering project was kind of unexpected since it wasn’t something I planned on doing before the opportunity appeared.

I study Psychology in University but I was a little disappointed with some of the classes. I wanted to gain experience instead of just memorizing theory, see more and learn by doing. Because that’s how people actually learn. We all learn by living.

When I was little my mother used to hang up posters around the house and I especially liked one that had three sentences written on it. It said: If you tell me, I will forget it. If you show me, I’m afraid I could forget it. If I do it, I will learn it. And the third sentence is what I want.

I have always loved being around kids and, back in Spain, I used to babysit, help children with homework, teach artistic rollerskating in a primary school and worked once in a summer camp.

But I wanted to challenge myself to gain confidence in myself and in what I do to be able to improve.

I wanted to discover who I could be and what I could do in a different country and out of my comfort zone.

So, for me, this project was like an open door to everything above. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to apply when I saw the offer. And here I am. And I couldn’t be more happy about it.

This past week has been so much fun for me and I have to thank my partners from the Info Sega Gamze as well as Cesar, Elena and Aneta who made it all possible. Thank you so much!

Also to the kids that come to the center to learn and have a good time there, to the other volunteers from different countries who came to Macedonia and to the people from Kavadarci I have met.

I’m afraid the six months I’m here for are going to fly by and, in no time, I won’t want to leave this town <3
